In the first week of January, the NRF’s BIG Show program hosts NRF University students from all over the country, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City, where students hear from Retail Executives from Walmart, Kohl’s, and HSN, as well as keynote speakers like Daymond John, from ABC’s SharkTank. Over the 3 day program, there is a Career Fair of major retailers hiring for internships and full-time positions, as well as a two hour long round table with hundreds of retail professionals prepared to share advice, network, and provide their own professional background. At this program, top winners of the NRF scholarships present their case competitions, and winners are announced. The NRF provides multiple scholarships such as the Rising Star Scholarship, Next Generation Scholarship, NRF Student Ambassador Scholarship, and the Student Challenge Scholarships.
While also in NYC, UMN NRF students toured the iconic Bergdorf Goodman store location with UMN professor Dave Loranger, who used to manage the second floor of the store.
In addition, UMN students were invited to tour Kohl’s NY Design office, for a night of networking, desserts, and hearing about the wonderful internship and full-time positions offered within Kohl’s. Kohl’s also sponsored a private night of ice skating at Rockefeller’s Ice Skating Rink in the heart of NYC.
